Page with redirect.
Verify the destination before changing the rule.

A redirected URL and its destination play different roles. A Search Console redirect label can be expected after a deliberate move. Investigate whether the redirect sends readers to the correct final page and whether your own links still advertise the old version.

01

Identify the intended move

Write down the source URL, destination and business reason for the redirect. A retired service page, hostname consolidation and an accidental template rule are different cases. Preserve the rule’s owner and implementation location so the investigation reaches the right system.

  • Record exact URLs
  • Confirm whether the move is intended
  • Identify CDN, platform or application ownership
02

Follow the actual response chain

Request the source and follow each Location destination until you reach a final response. Save the status codes and hosts. A browser that eventually displays a page can conceal loops, extra hops or a destination that fails for direct requests.

  • Look for loops and long chains
  • Check HTTPS and hostname transitions
  • Test a direct request to the destination
03

Check the destination’s meaning

The final page should answer the need behind the old URL where a meaningful replacement exists. Do not send every removed page to the homepage simply to avoid a 404 report. Decide whether a genuine replacement, a different response or restoration is appropriate to the actual content.

  • Compare page purpose and main content
  • Verify the final status
  • Review accidental redirects to login or unrelated pages
04

Update the URLs you control

If a move is correct, update internal links, relevant canonical hints and the sitemap inventory to the preferred destination. Keep redirect behavior for old external references as appropriate. This separates a discovery cleanup from a decision to remove the redirect itself.

  • Check navigation and related links
  • Inspect canonical targets
  • Remove obsolete sitemap entries
05

Test representative variants

Try the source with the slash, hostname and query behavior relevant to your setup. A test query can verify parameter preservation when needed; it is not a reason to forward sensitive parameters indiscriminately. Include a real unrelated page as a regression control.

  • State expected parameter behavior
  • Check one-hop behavior where practical
  • Avoid exposing private URL values in reports
06

Document implementation and later indexing separately

After release, retain the rule change, response chain and destination checks. Where authorized, inspect later Search Console observations. A correct HTTP redirect is an implementation result; it is not a guarantee of when the destination will appear in search.

  • Save the deployment identifier
  • Record outstanding crawl questions
  • Do not repeatedly undo an intentional redirect to clear a label
