Generative engine optimization is often used for work intended to improve how content can be found and used in AI-assisted search. This checklist offers a bounded website review. It does not promise citations, a universal ranking method or access to every platform’s internal systems.
01Name the platform and the question
Choose a specific audience question and the platform you intend to examine. A claim about Google AI Overviews does not establish behavior in another assistant. Record the test date, visible experience and whether the observation is repeatable. Keep a stable question set so later comparisons are not based on whichever prompt produces the most flattering screenshot.
- Write the intended reader task
- Identify the actual platform
- Record the conditions of each observation
02Check public accessibility
For Google AI search features, the existing Search foundations still apply. Google says supporting pages must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet; eligibility does not guarantee inclusion. Inspect the public response, main text, crawl controls and internal discovery. Use authorized property access to inspect indexing rather than inferring it from a successful HTTP request.
- Verify the final public URL
- Check the answer is available as text
- Separate technical eligibility from selection
03Strengthen the answer where evidence supports it
Read the page against the selected question. Add missing definitions, clear comparisons or evidence that helps a reader make a decision. Explain the source and date of claims that can change. This is an editorial improvement method, not a claim that a particular heading pattern or sentence length causes an assistant to cite the page.
- Keep factual sources near claims
- Remove unsupported business results
- Make limitations easy to find
04Maintain consistent facts and links
Check important product or service facts across the page, related pages and any structured data. An offer should not change meaning between the visible text and its markup. Use internal links to help readers reach supporting explanations, and remove obsolete claims when the underlying service changes. A special file or invented credential cannot substitute for accurate public information.
- Compare visible copy with markup
- Check related URLs
- Assign an owner for changing facts
05Measure observations with their limits
If authorized, record actual citations, visible answers, referrals and inquiry evidence as different observations. One answer screenshot does not show how often everyone sees it. A crawler request shows access, not a citation, and a referral does not prove a sale. Save enough context for another reviewer to understand exactly what was observed.
- Retain the question and timestamp
- Label manual samples as samples
- Do not manufacture visibility percentages
06Release and report a bounded change
Choose a concrete improvement such as correcting an inaccurate comparison or making an important answer available in initial HTML. Verify the published page and record the commit. Report what changed first, then describe any separately observed platform behavior. Continue with evidence-backed work rather than rewriting all pages merely because an assistant response varies.
- Keep a before-and-after record
- Check the public page independently
- Separate deployment from later outcomes
