What is answer engine optimization. Define the question and the evidence before choosing a label.
AEO usually means answer engine optimization in search-marketing discussions. It describes work intended to help content be found, understood and used in answer-oriented experiences. The label overlaps with GEO and AI search terminology; it is not a universal platform certification or a promise that a page will be cited.
01
Translate the acronym into a concrete task
Ask which question a reader needs answered, which page contains the answer and which platform you are discussing. A request to improve AEO could mean correcting an inaccurate product fact, making an explanation accessible or measuring an observed citation. Those tasks have different owners and acceptance criteria even when a proposal uses the same acronym.
Name the actual question
Identify the public answer URL
Describe a testable change
02
Keep SEO and AI visibility connected
Bing’s guidelines explain that discovery, indexing and content clarity also support eligibility for its grounding experiences. They do not guarantee citations. Treat the technical delivery of a page as a prerequisite to investigate, not as proof that every assistant has accessed or selected it. Platform-specific controls and observations should remain labeled by platform.
Verify public delivery
Read the relevant platform guidance
Avoid universal claims from one test
03
Use AEO and GEO as working terminology
Microsoft Advertising discusses both AEO and GEO in its guide to AI discovery. In practice, teams may use the terms differently or interchangeably. Define your scope in ordinary language rather than buying a label: the page changes, data sources, supported platforms and evidence the work will produce. A different acronym does not justify duplicating the same content project.
State how the proposal uses the term
Compare actual deliverables
Keep overlapping work in one plan
04
Distinguish the observations
A visible answer, a citation to your page and a referral visit are separate events. A manually recorded response is a sample under particular conditions. A platform report may aggregate supported surfaces rather than describe a single answer. Keep the question, date, platform and source with each observation so another reviewer can understand its limits.
Record the original question
Separate samples from aggregate reports
Do not infer a sale from a citation
05
Choose an answer improvement with evidence
Read the selected page and identify a specific gap: an unclear definition, missing comparison criterion or outdated factual value. Correct it using an appropriate source and verify the published answer. The aim is a useful, supportable page; inserting repeated brand references or instructions aimed at manipulating a model does not improve the reader’s explanation.
Keep sources near changing claims
Check visible copy and structured data agree
Remove unsupported promotional claims
06
Agree what completion means
For a content task, completion can mean the reviewed explanation is publicly available with its intended links and metadata. Later AI visibility and business effects need their own authorized measurement. Use the linked readiness checklist for implementation questions, while keeping this terminology decision separate from any claim about current citations or traffic.
